    IMG00150-20121005-1158

C1 along with Mr Sterling and Miss McCourt visited the heritage centre in Ferrycarraig during October. The centre deals with Irish history from the Stone Age right up Early Christainity. The students were shown a short video and then had a guide who brought them through the ages. The students got to experience a Fulacht Fia, which is an ancient cooking method and they got to taste the food prepared, in this case a ham joint. It was a great day and the boys seemed to enjoy it. We expect that the experience will help with their preparations for the Junior Certificate...

  • A2 visit the home of Blessed Edmund Rice

    A2 Callan

On Monday, 30th of April 2012 A2 travelled to Callan, Co Kilkenny accompanied by Ms Donlan, Ms O'Halloran, and Mr Carey. The trip was arranged in response to the Christian Brothers of Callan invitation to come and visit Callan to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the birth of Blessed Edmund Rice. Having travelled for nearly 2 hours they arrived in Westcourt, Callan and were greeted by Br Malachy and Br Thomas who then proceeded to show the group around Westcourt. The tour included a visit to Edmund's house, the church where prayers were said, and the heritage centre where the lads attended a talk on the life of Blessed...

  • Transition Year Gaisce Hike to Glendalough

    Gaisce Hike 3

Our trip to Glendalough started off the same as any other, everyone having to meet at the hall and then the roll call, waiting for the person who’s late and then a pep talk from Mr Hayden saying how it would be fun and how we are all “a grand bunch of lads”. Mr Furlong, our renowned hiker then came in and decided it would be better to give us a cold splash of reality and remind us that we’d have to walk 25 kilometres or so in less than two days. He then followed this by telling us that we’d be walking the bulk of the hike in the first day. After these rousing talks we all got onto...

  • Hamlet at the Helix

This April, students in Ms Egan’s, Ms Donlon’s and some from Mr Branigan’s classes attended The Second Age Theatre Company’s comtemporary production of Hamlet. Directed by Aoife Spillane Hinks, the performance successfully captured one of the greatest tragedies of all time, a story of intrigue, treachery and tragedy. Conor O’Rourke from fifth year gives his thoughts on the performance. I enjoyed the production of Hamlet. It was interesting to see the play as it would have been performed when first written. The character of Hamlet was very convincing and he showed his emotions well. I thought Claudius was quite good also, but he tended to overdo the part in the second half of the play. Polonius and Laertes were both excellently...

  • First Year Field Trip

    1styr-2

On the first day after the Easter break, classes A2 and A3 went on a field trip to the Wicklow Mountains with Mr.Hayden, Mr.Dalton and Miss Dunne. Students were out of class for the whole day and went to visit places such as Lough Bray Upper and Lower as well as Lough Tay. They stopped off at the River Cloghoge to conduct a river study. Class A2 and A3 identified the speed at which the river was travelling and took some random samples of the bedload deposited in the river. The trip then moved on to the Glenmacnass waterfall and concluded in Glendalough. After lunch students enjoyed a video presentation by the OPW on the historic settlement in Glendalough and were...
