Success for the French Debating Team

Coláiste Éanna’s French debating team notched up an impressive first round win against CBS Thurles in the Alliance Française Joutes Oratoires on Friday 11th October.

The team, made up of Luke Dunleavy (Capt.), Cian Kelly, Robert O’Connell and Patrick Lyons successfully proposed the motion that “Notre système scolaire ne répond plus à nos besoins” – our schools no longer cater to our needs.

Central to Coláiste Éanna’s case were the limited curriculum at primary level including the almost total absence of science and modern languages, the predominance of rote learning for examinations at second level, the structure of the school day and school year and the effects of five years of cutbacks on the education system.

This is the second time that Coláiste Éanna has entered the Joutes Oratoires which is a prestigious competition now in its 24th year. Aside from the obvious benefits for the team members, all senior cycle French students can benefit from listening to the team practise, offering alternative arguments and attending the debates.

In addition to winning the debate, there was added recognition for Luke Dunleavy who was named best speaker on the night. He will receive a medal for his achievement at the overall final in May.
