India Immersion Programme

In February, Jack Brophy,  Kevin Brophy, Chris Cotter, David Carrigan, Rossa Lynch, Kevin Hughes, Alan McGrath, Seán Keller, Conor Medler, Barry Morton, Shane O’Brien, Ruairí O’Donoghue together with  Ms. Ní Bhrosnacháin, Mr. Stirling, Mr. Dalton and Ms. McCabe are going to Kolkata in India as part of the World Immersion Programme.

They will be guests of Aashirwad and St George’s schools, which are run by the Christian Brothers in Kolkata for the poorest ‘street kids’. They will also visit Mother Teresa’s Hospice. The group will help out in English classes and will take part in practical craft classes where they will be instructed by the local students, in the local language!

Coláiste Éanna takes part in this World Immersion Programme every two years and students who have travelled to Kolkata say that the visit has had an enormous impact on their lives and careers. They also hoped that in a very small way they may have affected the lives of their hosts.

The group travelling this year expect this trip to be a wake-up call, an introduction to the harsh realities of the conditions of the people who live in one of the most densely populated cities in the world. They know it will be a very graphic and thought -provoking experience, but it will be an experience that will last them a lifetime, an experience that they will learn from and hopefully give them a greater understanding of others.

Over the last two weekends the students and teachers have been actively fund raising and with the support of our local community singificant funds have been raised.  Our final fund raising event takes place on Febraury 2nd. There will be a Table Quiz in Ballyboden GAA Club, a table of four costs €40.
